Hello,
Thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet! Today, I wanted to share the story behind my very first children’s book: Magical Friendship Wall. Writing it was more than just putting words on a page, it was a journey shaped by more than two decades in the classrooms in India, Dubai, Canada, countless young voices, and a deep belief in the power of kindness.
Where It All Began
As a teacher for over 20 + years, I’ve been lucky enough to spend my days surrounded by curious, creative, and often hilariously honest children. I’ve taught everything from Kindergarten to Grade 5, and while I have enjoyed teaching elementary and every age group holds a special place in my heart, it is the younger students, ages 6 and 7, that have recently captured it again. Maybe it is because my own children are now grown, and I find myself drawn to the innocent joy and spontaneous wonder of early learners.
It was in these classrooms, filled with scribbled drawings, sticky hands, and endless imagination, that the seed for Magical Friendship Wall was planted.
The Power of Student Voice
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned as a teacher is this: when you give children a voice, they surprise you, every time. Whether it’s speaking up for a friend, sharing their feelings, or expressing an idea through art or storytelling, kids have an incredible capacity for empathy and creativity. I wanted to write a story that celebrated that voice, the quiet courage of being kind, the magic of making a friend, and the strength it takes to be yourself.
Why a Wall?
In one of my past classrooms, during a community circle, a spontaneous idea sparked something truly special. We unrolled a big sheet of paper and decided to create a space just for kindness, a “Kindness Poster.”
Students began writing thoughtful messages, drawing little notes, and sharing shout-outs for their classmates. We decided to put it in one corner of the classroom and it quickly became more than just a poster, it turned into a safe space filled with encouragement, joy, and connection. It became our Kindness Wall.
The most heartwarming moments were seeing students’ faces light up when they found their names or read something kind written about them. That wall became a daily reminder that their words hold power, their actions matter, and kindness spreads like magic.
That beautiful real-life experience planted the seed for my debut children’s book, Magical Friendship Wall. It’s a story inspired by kids, for kids, rooted in empathy, imagination, and the classroom moments that stay with us forever.
A Book with a Message
Magical Friendship Wall isn’t just a story, it’s a reflection of what I’ve seen and believe:
- Kindness is contagious
- Young children understand empathy better than we give them credit for
- Every child holds a spark of magic waiting to be seen
From Classroom to Bookshelf
Writing this book was my way of taking the spirit of my classroom and sharing it with the world. I hope it brings joy to young readers, opens up meaningful conversations at home and in school, and reminds children that even the smallest act of kindness can create something beautiful.
At the end of Magical Friendship Wall, you’ll find some Historically and Culturally Responsive activities, designed for children to try with their teachers or parents. These reflection prompts, discussion starters, and creative tasks are meant to help young readers explore empathy, community, and the impact of their words in an inclusive and thoughtful way.
One of the most special moments following the book’s release was at McHugh Public School (Peel District School Board), where students came together to create a beautiful mural inspired by the book. It was an unforgettable experience watching their ideas and voices come to life through art, a true celebration of friendship, belonging, and student voice.
